Seismic Analysis and Design of RC Buildings
The seismic design code of Bangladesh (Bangladesh National Building Code) was first formulated in 1993 and enacted in 2006. There are a lot of RC private buildings constructed before 1993 and even after 1993 have designed and constructed without considering the seismic force due to a lack of knowledge on seismic design. As a result, Bangladesh may face a devastating situation if any strong earthquake hit which the experts are predicting. With the passage of time, the seismic design codes such as ASCE, UBC, IBC, IS, EURO CODE etc. have been updated. Government of Bangladesh is also updating the BNBC-1993 which (BNBC-2020) is supposed to be published within very short time. Moreover, Standing Order on Disaster (SOD) of the GoB has emphasized to promote seismic-resistant building design. In these circumstances, it is high time for the structural designers of Bangladesh to sense the future earthquake vulnerabilities, understand the basic concepts of seismic design and most importantly practice it with engineering ethics.
Road Safety & Geometric Design
High fatality and injury rates on Bangladesh’s roads are undermining the remarkable progress that this South Asian nation has made on boosting economic growth and reducing poverty. Estimates of annual deaths in road accidents range from 2,538 to nearly 10 times that—between 20,736 and 21,316, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Improving road safety in Bangladesh is vital to national health, well-being, and economic growth. In combating the man-made epidemic on road by traffic accidents and injuries, some major initiatives have been undertaken in Bangladesh in the past decade including policy formulation, research, education, legislation & sanctions, and engineering intervention. Geometric design consistency is emerging as an important rule in highway design. Identifying and treating any inconsistency on a highway can significantly improve its safety performance.
GIS-based Decision Support System for Building Retrofit
In order to reduce the energy demand of the building sector, the energy demand of existing buildings need to be reduced. For retrofitting the building, many options are available, such as replacing windows, improving the building envelope or replacing the heating system to improve the energy efficiency of a building or lower carbon emissions. Most building owners are not energy experts and are thus overwhelmed by the available choices for retrofitting their buildings. As a GIS & Building Retrofit Design Consultancy firm, we propose a web based decision support system (DSS) using a GIS based building stock model. The system allows users to select and compare different retrofit scenarios in terms of carbon emissions and energy savings and thus to inform themselves about the potential of energetic retrofit of their building.
